Job Description

Duties

In this position as a Military Pay Technician, you will be responsible for establishing, maintaining and terminating a variety of military pay accounts; auditing and correcting leave and pay accounts; reviewing and researching payroll control reports, and a variety of other military pay issues.


Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:


-Reviewing and processing final actions to resolve various complicated pay problems using a variety of techniques for military pay actions.


-Reviewing payroll control and variance reports. Utilizing the automated payroll system to research accounts, correct deficiencies, and calculate appropriate entitlements and special payments.


-Computing the rates of pay according to the members' service category and determining the proper pay tables to be used for calculation of pay.


-Researching and correcting pay accounts, notifying members of computations to their account, and processing debts owed to the government ensuring the member is afforded due process and waiver rights.


-Processing a full range of personnel actions for a military personnel program area.

Qualifications

You qualify for the GS-06 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Some examples of specialized experience are:


-Calculating pay entitlements, and inputting appropriate transactions to credit or debit the member's pay account.


-Researching pay or payroll accounts.


-Responding to routine inquiries concerning payroll matters.


-Researching leave inquiries.


-Processing routine personnel actions.


You qualify for the GS-07 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Some examples of specialized experience are:


-Calculating pay entitlements, and inputting appropriate transactions to credit or debit the member's pay account.


-Assisting with reviewing garnishments, indebtedness and/or collection transactions to ensure they follow regulations.


-Reviewing income tax levy notices or court-ordered payments.


-Assisting with adjusting leave accounts.


-Assisting with correcting pay accounts.


-Assisting with processing a full range of personnel actions.


-Assisting with payments of claims or allotments of pay to a spouse or ex-spouse.


-Assisting with verifying that transactions are mathematically accurate, contain proper accounting data, and are in compliance with federal laws and regulations.


National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
