The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Kodiak!


What you will be doing:
This position acts as the crew leader for the floating Buskin River coho salmon weir. In addition, this position will participate in a rockfish population assessment project, coho salmon stream surveys, a drone-supported mark-recapture population study and is responsible for various data dissemination, analysis and summary reports. This position is typically staffed through mid-November.

The working conditions you can expect:
Working as the crew leader, this position is responsible for leading the maintenance and operation of a salmon counting weir, including identifying and counting fish, collecting age, sex, and length data; assisting with routine cleaning and maintenance of the weir; keeping accurate records of daily activities and fish sampling results; performing computerized data entry and editing; and leading the efforts and managing day-to-day tasks of two F&W Technician 2 crew members.


Duties for the rockfish population assessment project include operation of a 22 foot boat, hook and line capture of rockfish, species identification, sex determination, length measurement, and tagging rockfish. The coho salmon steam survey population study includes stream surveys in remote territory, occasionally up to 10 miles in length, beach seining and disc tagging of coho salmon directed by a remotely-operated Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Duties for database dissemination and analysis require skills such as proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, willingness to learn Geographic Information Systems software, and skills in scientific writing and data analysis. Duties for salmon scale analysis includes becoming familiar with aging, scanning scale images, and measuring scale annuli on image measurement software. Additionally, trips to monitor various sport fisheries via ATV, boat, floatplane, and hiking are necessary.


This position includes a significant amount of interaction with brown bears and training in shotgun proficiency and wildlife interaction are required as on-the-job training. This position requires trips to monitor various sport fisheries via ATV, boat, floatplane, and hiking are necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.



Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.



Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.



Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.


Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
