The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Subsistence is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Fairbanks!
What you will be doing: The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Subsistence, is looking for two Fish and Wildlife Technicians to join our team. These positions that will support subsistence research projects in the Northern Region. The incumbent will participate in data collection efforts in communities throughout the Arctic, Interior and Western areas of the state through household survey administration, the documentation of traditional knowledge, and other data collection efforts. This work involves fieldwork in remote communities. The incumbent will work under close coordination with Program Managers and other Subsistence Resource Specialists assigned to Northern Region projects to ensure quality and timely completion of priority tasks.

The mission of the Subsistence Division is to scientifically gather, quantify, evaluate, and report information about customary and traditional uses of Alaska's fish and wildlife resources. This position plays a critical role in that mission by gathering data for the management of wild resources in the northern region of Alaska, to ensure sustainable subsistence opportunities for residents.

The working conditions you can expect: This position is located at the 1300 College Rd Fairbanks office location of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The incumbent will regularly interact with members of the public in a research capacity, coordinating with rural communities to plan, implement, and review research; conducting fieldwork to collect harvest or traditional knowledge data; and with colleagues at ADF&G or other agencies regarding the management of Alaska's subsistence resources. Daily work tasks span from survey administration, project planning, and transcription of ethnographic interviews. Fieldwork typically requires travel in small planes and boats away from the duty station for 1-2 weeks at a time multiple times per year. The field season generally lasts from January through May but can begin earlier and last later than that time frame dependent on project needs.
- Requires frequent travel within the State for 1-2 weeks, multiple times per year for fieldwork and other meetings.
Who we are looking for: We are looking for an energetic and committed professional who has the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines and carry out tasks in a timely fashion.
- Experience collecting data using established social science methods, working with databases, preparing data analyses and summaries, writing research proposals, and writing technical or peer-reviewed reports and preparing presentations.
- Familiarity and experience with standard office computing equipment and software, including Microsoft Office and Windows.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
